Akwa Ibom Launches Massive 110,000-Women Cooperative Scheme to Counter Economic Hardship

In a decisive bid to cushion the biting economic realities facing rural households, the Akwa Ibom State Government has announced a massive socio-economic empowerment blueprint targeting at least 110,000 rural women. This strategic intervention, which seeks to leverage the grassroots reach of local cooperative societies, marks a major milestone in Governor Umo Eno's rural development-focused ARISE Agenda.

According to senior administrative sources, the policy is structured to bypass traditional bureaucratic bottlenecks by routing capital, training, and agricultural inputs directly through verified cooperative clusters. This approach ensures that active market women, smallholder farmers, and micro-entrepreneurs who form the bedrock of the state's informal economy are the direct beneficiaries.

Speaking on the development, state officials noted that the initiative is designed to complement existing federal social safety nets while creating a localized, self-sustaining economic loop. By empowering rural women, the state expects an immediate multiplier effect on food security, household income, and local market liquidity, particularly in remote agrarian communities that are often underserved by conventional financial institutions.

"We are shifting the paradigm from ad-hoc political handouts to structured, cooperative-driven economic capacity building. When you empower a rural woman through a cooperative, you stabilize an entire community's supply chain."

Sociological data from the region indicates that women constitute over 65% of the agricultural labor force and micro-retail trade in Akwa Ibom, yet they face the steepest hurdles in accessing credit.
