In what has been described as a stark and sobering reminder of the escalating global climate emergency, Belgium has officially recorded nearly 3,000 excess deaths during successive, brutal heatwaves. According to reports released by Sciensano, the Belgian national public health institute, the country experienced an unprecedented surge in mortality as temperatures repeatedly shattered historical baselines over the summer season.

The statistical breakdown of the tragedy reveals a relentless onslaught of heat. The first major wave, spanning June 18 to July 3, proved to be the deadliest, claiming an astonishing 2,035 excess lives—representing a massive 49 percent increase above normal mortality rates. This was swiftly followed by a second spike between July 4 and July 17, which claimed another 535 lives. The final leg of the summer heat, from July 28 to August 16, added 365 deaths to the grim tally, even as the country battled some of its worst wildfires in modern history.

Meteorological data from the Royal Meteorological Institute (RMI) confirmed that the average temperature at the official national reference station in Uccle, just outside Brussels, reached an unprecedented 20.3°C. This figure sits a staggering 2.4°C above the historical mean of recent decades.
