Diphtheria Outbreak: Federal Government Deploys Emergency Task Force, 500,000 Vaccine Doses To Kano, Katsina

In a decisive effort to halt the troubling resurgence of diphtheria, the Federal Government, through the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Pate, has activated a high-powered emergency task force targeting severe outbreaks among children in Katsina and Kano States. The prompt intervention follows escalating reports of localized infections that threaten to overburden rural healthcare infrastructure across the North-West zone.

According to an official statement released in Abuja by Ado Bako, Assistant Director of Information and Public Relations at the Ministry, the multi-agency body represents a unified front comprising the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), state health ministries, and international partners. As an immediate containment measure, the NPHCDA has dispatched 500,000 doses of vaccines to Katsina and Kano to bolster emergency immunisation drives in affected and high-risk communities.

Co-chaired by the Director-General of the NCDC and the Director of Public Health, the newly formed operational committee includes Commissioners for Health from Katsina, Kano, Zamfara, and Sokoto States, alongside representatives from the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, and the National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Programme. This strategic alignment underscores the cross-border nature of airborne transmission, requiring a synchronized containment strategy spanning neighbouring sub-regions.

Key directives issued to the task force mandate an immediate escalation of disease surveillance, contact tracing, and aggressive community sensitisation campaigns. Furthermore, specialized treatment annexes are scheduled to be established across Katsina State's three senatorial districts—Katsina, Daura, and Funtua—to decentralize case management and reduce transit delays for critically ill pediatric patients.
