Diphtheria Outbreak: Kano Appeals to Federal Government for Urgent Vaccine Intervention

Kano State has formally appealed to the Federal Government, through the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), to expedite the distribution of additional diphtheria vaccines. The state's healthcare infrastructure is currently facing immense pressure as medical personnel work tirelessly to contain a highly contagious outbreak that threatens densely populated metropolitan and rural communities.

Diphtheria, a serious bacterial infection that primarily attacks the mucous membranes of the nose and throat, has historically posed a recurring threat to public health in Nigeria's most populous northern state. According to reports from regional clinics, the persistent gap in routine immunization coverage has left a substantial cohort of children vulnerable, transforming what should be a preventable disease into a critical emergency.

State health officials are stressing that clinical intervention must be matched by public cooperation. Epidemiologists warn that late presentation of cases at isolation centers remains a primary driver of preventable deaths. Parents and guardians are strongly urged to bring children exhibiting symptoms—such as a thick grey membrane in the throat, severe sore throat, swollen glands, and breathing difficulties—to the nearest healthcare facility immediately to save lives.
