Drama in Abuja as Continental Hotel Workers Reject Unionisation, Rebel Against NLC and TUC Picket Lines

An unusual and highly tense drama played out in the heart of Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory on Thursday as employees of the Abuja Continental Hotel openly revolted against the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC). The joint labor unions had descended on the luxury hospitality facility early in the morning to picket the premises, citing alleged anti-labour practices and the management's refusal to allow staff to unionise. However, the planned disruption took an unexpected turn when the hotel’s own workforce formed a human shield, vehemently rejecting the intervention of the external labor leaders.

Armed with placards of their own, the workers clashed verbally with the picketing union officials, creating a chaotic scene that drew the attention of security agencies and passersby. Union leaders, who claimed they were acting in the best interest of the hospitality workers, were met with chants of disapproval. According to reports from the scene, the employees accused the NLC and TUC of acting on ulterior motives rather than a genuine concern for their welfare, asserting that they were comfortable with their current terms of employment.

The NLC and TUC mobilisers had allegedly planned to shut down operations at the hotel, a move they argued was necessary to compel the management to respect the constitutional rights of the staff to associate freely. The unions alleged that the hotel management had consistently suppressed attempts by the workers to form local chapters of the National Union of Hotels and Personal Services Workers (NUHPSW). Despite these assertions, the rank-and-file workers insisted that they did not wish to be part of any union, citing fears of salary deductions for union dues and unnecessary industrial actions that could threaten their job security.

As the confrontation intensified, security operatives, including men of the Nigeria Police Force, were deployed to prevent the situation from degenerating into physical violence. The hotel's entrance remained a battleground of ideologies for several hours, with labor leaders expressing shock at the level of resistance from the very workers they had allegedly come to liberate from corporate exploitation.
