EPL Rules Revolution: Referees Set to Crack Down on Penalty Box Grappling at Set-Pieces

The English Premier League, renowned globally for its blistering pace and bruising physicality, is on the verge of a major officiating shift. According to authoritative reports from refereeing circles, match officials have been handed strict directives to crack down on the persistent grappling, blocking, and shirt-pulling that have long characterized set-pieces. For years, corners and free-kicks have resembled wrestling matches rather than football plays, with defenders using underhand tactics to neutralize attackers under the blind spot of referees.

Under the new guidelines championed by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), referees are instructed to take a zero-tolerance approach. Sustained holding, wrapping arms around opponents, and deliberate blocking off the ball will be met with immediate sanctions. The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) is also expected to play a more proactive role, alerting on-field officials to clear-cut holding infractions that might have occurred away from the primary focus of the camera.
