High Production Costs: How Localizing Oilfield Chemicals Can Shield the Naira and Boost Reserves

Nigeria’s crude oil production costs remain a critical bottleneck to the nation's economic recovery, hovering at an estimated average of $40 per barrel. This figure stands in stark, troubling contrast to the OPEC+ bloc’s average of roughly $10 per barrel, severely limiting the net foreign exchange inflows flowing into the Central Bank of Nigeria. A primary, yet frequently overlooked, driver of these inflated operating expenses is the industry's near-total reliance on imported, finished specialty oilfield chemicals required to keep pipelines flowing and wells producing.
According to Engr. Godswill Chidiebere Agomuo, a veteran chemical engineer and Technical Manager at Pacegate Energy & Resources Ltd (PEARL), this perpetual dependency on imported finished chemicals represents a massive capital flight that directly undermines the value of the Naira. By continuously sourcing these specialized fluids from foreign markets, upstream operators subject their operating budgets to the volatility of the parallel forex market, ultimately passing the high cost of production back to the Nigerian economy.
Agomuo, who boasts over two decades of hands-on experience in production chemistry, argues that the local formulation and blending of these specialized production chemicals is no longer just an industrial recommendation, but an economic imperative. He maintains that domesticating this critical segment of the petroleum value chain would immediately plug the foreign exchange drain, fostering a stronger local currency while building robust domestic technical capacity.
"Nigeria's crude production costs remain among the highest in the OPEC+ bloc, heavily burdened by imported specialty chemicals. Energy experts argue that localizing chemical formulation will not only slash operating expenditures but also significantly ease the persistent foreign exchange pressure on the Naira."
