Kano Pleads for Urgent Federal Intervention as Unreported Diphtheria Deaths Spark Fresh Health Emergency

In a bid to arrest a rapidly escalating health crisis, the Kano State Government has formally appealed to the Federal Government for an emergency supply of diphtheria vaccines to launch a comprehensive, statewide mass immunization campaign. The urgent request follows a tragic resurgence of the vaccine-preventable bacterial infection, which has reportedly claimed the lives of over 50 children in Rano and several other local government areas across the state. This silent toll has cast a shadow over local communities, raising critical questions about vaccine equity and rural healthcare access in Northern Nigeria.

Addressing journalists during an emergency media briefing, the Director-General of the Kano State Centre for Disease Control (KNCDC), Muhammad Abbas, confirmed that the state had officially written to federal authorities to secure the critical vaccine shipments. Abbas expressed profound concern over a worrying trend of concealment, revealing that many of the fatal cases were never reported to formal healthcare facilities. This lack of data, he warned, severely undermines epidemiological response plans and masks the true scale of the outbreak.

Historical data underscores the immense pressure under which Kano's public health architecture operates. Since 2022, the state has logged a staggering 38,000 suspected cases of diphtheria, with more than 31,000 clinically confirmed. Despite the deployment of 126 disease surveillance and notification officers across all 44 local government areas, the system remains vulnerable to rural isolation and delayed clinical presentations, leaving health officials racing against time to curb transmission chains.
