Protest Rocks Sokoto as Families of Deceased, Serving Police Officers Kick Against Barracks Demolition

Widespread agitation engulfed residential quarters in Sokoto following the commencement of a contentious demolition exercise targeting police housing units, leaving several dependents and widows of personnel stranded in sheer despair.

The protesting occupants, comprising largely women and vulnerable children, carried placards and voiced their distress over what they described as an uncoordinated eviction drive executed without adequate notice or alternative relocation plans.

Among the affected demonstrators was Safiya, a widow whose late husband served the Nigeria Police Force for decades before his demise. Struggling to hold back tears, she recounted the harrowing uncertainty her household now faces.

"My late husband gave his youth and life in service to this nation as our sole breadwinner. Tearing down our roof today without any safety net leaves my young children with nowhere to sleep and no future," Safiya lamented.

Community members who witnessed the demonstration noted that the affected families have resided in the quarters for years, underscoring the urgent need for humanitarian intervention before hundreds are permanently rendered destitute.
