Tragedy in Ilorin: Mother, Four Children Die in Kwara Building Collapse as Surviving Family Members Battle for Life

In a heartbreaking development that has thrown the ancient city of Ilorin into mourning, the death toll from the catastrophic collapse of a three-storey building at Popo Giwa, Kwara State, has officially risen to five. The victims, identified as a mother and her four children, were tragically killed when the structure gave way in the early hours of Tuesday. According to community sources, the deceased have since been laid to rest in accordance with Islamic rites, leaving behind a community deeply traumatized by the suddenness of the disaster.

The incident, which occurred at approximately 5:00 a.m. at No. 41 Popo Giwa Street, beside the Gogoro Mosque, initially trapped eight members of the same family beneath the heavy rubble. Local emergency responders and brave residents scrambled to rescue survivors in the dark. While five lives have been cut short, the father of the family—reportedly a serving soldier in the Nigerian Army—and two surviving children were pulled out alive. They are currently receiving emergency medical attention at a local hospital, where clinicians are monitoring their recovery closely.

Confirming the post-incident decisions, the head of the family, Mr. Lanre Qudus, indicated that the surviving relatives have completely vacated the premises. A joint decision has been reached to demolish the remaining portion of the compromised building to prevent another imminent collapse, especially after the structure visibly failed critical structural integrity assessments. Grief-stricken relatives and neighbors continue to throng the area to offer condolences to the devastated family.

According to eyewitness accounts provided by local resident Abdulganiy Musa, the mother worked as a casual staff member at the Michael Imoudu National Institute for Labour Studies (MINILS) in Ilorin. Her untimely death, alongside her four children, has sparked fresh conversations regarding the structural safety of residential buildings in highly populated municipal areas across Kwara State.
