Weah, Fubara Warn of Threats to Democracy, Demand Fearless and Independent Judiciary

With political tensions simmering across West Africa and Nigeria’s political landscape remaining highly volatile, former Liberian President George Oppong Weah and Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara have issued a stern warning to the legal community. Speaking at the prestigious 66th Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Port Harcourt, both leaders emphasized that the survival of democratic governance hinges entirely on a fearless, neutral, and independent judiciary.

In his compelling keynote address, Weah, who made history by gracefully handing over power after Liberia’s tightly contested elections, argued that threats to democracy no longer emerge solely from military coups or defeated autocrats refusing to vacate office. Instead, he asserted that a far more insidious threat lies in the quiet degradation of democratic institutions, particularly when the judiciary colludes with corrupt political actors to subvert the will of the people and undermine the rule of law.

Reinforcing this sentiment, Governor Fubara charged the Bar and the Bench to recognize the profound real-world consequences of their legal pronouncements on the nation's stability. Fubara declared that the quality of justice administered by the courts is directly linked to national development and public peace, warning that a compromised judicial system is a surefire recipe for societal collapse.

Fubara lamented that the image of the judiciary has been severely battered by a slavish adherence to rigid legal technicalities, unjust precedents, deliberate delays, and blatant political manipulation. He urged judges to break free from these self-imposed shackles and ensure that truth and integrity prevail in every adjudication, regardless of the status or influence of the parties involved.
