Why It Is Unfair to Label South Africa Xenophobic — Consul-General Bobby Moroe

The diplomatic relations between Nigeria and South Africa have long been characterized by a delicate dance of economic cooperation and recurring grassroots friction. Recently, South Africa’s Consul-General to Nigeria, Prof. Bobby Moroe, stepped into the eye of the storm, challenging the global narrative that paints his nation as inherently xenophobic. According to Moroe, characterizing the entire rainbow nation based on isolated, albeit tragic, incidents of violence against foreign nationals is not only unfair but structurally inaccurate.

Speaking on the recurring tensions, the envoy emphasized that criminality should not be misconstrued as state-sanctioned or culturally systemic hatred of foreigners. He argued that South Africa remains one of the most receptive nations on the African continent, hosting millions of migrants who contribute to and benefit from the local economy. The diplomat insisted that law enforcement agencies are actively working to curb criminal elements who exploit local anxieties to perpetrate violence, stressing that these actions are roundly condemned by the Pretoria government.

However, critics and international observers point to a history of recurring, targeted attacks on African migrants, particularly Nigerians, Zimbabweans, and Ethiopians, which often flare up during periods of economic downturn. While Moroe maintains that these incidents are driven by localized economic competition and criminal opportunism rather than systemic xenophobia, human rights organizations have frequently accused local politicians of using populist rhetoric that stokes anti-foreigner sentiments.
