Bolt, inDrive Battle for Dominance as Uber Exits Nigeria After 12 Years

A fierce battle for market supremacy has erupted in Nigeria’s urban mobility ecosystem following the sudden departure of American ride-hailing pioneer Uber after over a decade of operations. The exit, which took effect on September 2, has created a major vacuum in Africa’s most populous nation, prompting primary rivals Bolt and inDrive to roll out aggressive consolidation strategies to absorb displaced drivers and millions of regular commuters.

Uber formally attributed its Nigerian withdrawal to "evolving business priorities and investment focus across the continent," effectively shutting down operations in a market of over 200 million people. The abrupt move sent shockwaves through the tech and transportation sectors, given Nigeria's strategic standing as one of the continent's most vibrant commercial hubs despite persistent foreign exchange headwinds and rising operational costs.

Seizing the immediate opening, inDrive reaffirmed its long-term commitment to the Nigerian market, positioning its non-algorithmic, peer-to-peer fare negotiation model as the most resilient structure for emerging economies. The mobility firm revealed that its active user base continues to record double-digit year-on-year growth, bolstered by diversified services including logistics and economy tiers.

Simultaneously, Bolt West Africa announced plans to deepen its infrastructure across major commercial centres including Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt. Teddy Appa-Dankyi, Senior General Manager for Bolt West Africa, emphasised that the platform remains anchored on long-term sustainability:
