Bolt, inDrive Battle for Dominance as Uber Exits Nigeria After 12 Years

While competing apps scramble to absorb thousands of vehicle owners and fleet operators, the organized labour movement has sounded the alarm over the vulnerability of gig workers. The Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON-NG) has called on the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment alongside the Federal Ministry of Transportation to institute emergency social dialogue to cushion the fallout on driver livelihoods.

AUATON General Secretary, Ayoade Ibrahim, argued that Uber's sudden exit without comprehensive severance or transitional frameworks illustrates the profound regulatory deficit governing multinational tech platforms operating in Nigeria. The union is demanding an immediate national regulatory floor covering minimum trip fares, capped platform commission rates, and clear procedural protections against arbitrary driver deactivations in line with International Labour Organisation (ILO) conventions.

"For twelve years the platform organised work, set prices, took commission, and decided who stayed online. When global investment priorities shifted toward robotaxis and a slimmer map of countries, it wound down the operation," Ibrahim stated, urging authorities to tie app operating licences to enforceable local labour conventions.

As inDrive actively courts stranded fleet owners with its 10 per cent commission structure and Bolt scales up driver incentive schemes, industry analysts note that the unfolding landscape marks a defining transition for Nigerian urban mobility. The coming months will test whether local regulation can finally mature to protect gig economy participants while allowing surviving platforms to build financially viable, inflation-resistant business models.
