Clean Sweep: APGA Claims All 21 Chairmanship and Councillorship Seats in Anambra Council Polls

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has asserted its absolute dominance over the political landscape of Anambra State by securing a clean sweep in the newly concluded Local Government elections. According to official declarations by the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC), the ruling party in the state clinched all 21 chairmanship seats and cleared every single councillorship position across the state's 326 wards.

Announcing the results at the commission's headquarters in Awka, the ANSIEC Chairman, Mrs. Genevieve Osakwe, described the election held on August 29, 2026, as a historic triumph of local democracy. She emphasized that the commission had meticulously collated results from all polling units, ensuring that the voice of the electorate was accurately captured and reflected in the final declarations. Osakwe commended the electorate for their peaceful conduct during the voting process, which she noted went ahead without major security disruptions.

However, the sweeping victory has not been received with unanimous applause. While APGA supporters erupted in wild celebrations across major hubs like Onitsha, Nnewi, and Awka, opposition elements have raised preliminary concerns. Representatives from the Labour Party (LP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) have voiced quiet complaints regarding late deployment of materials in certain districts, with some local coordinators claiming the process lacked the robust competitive edge expected of a state-wide exercise.
