FG Targets 10 Million Nigerian Households in Ambitious Clean Cooking Gas Expansion

In a decisive move to tackle public health vulnerabilities and environmental degradation, the Federal Government has announced a comprehensive rollout of its clean cooking gas programme, targeting over 10 million homes across Nigeria. The initiative forms a critical pillar of the nation's broader energy transition plan, which aims to phase out harmful domestic fuels like firewood, charcoal, and kerosene by 2060.

According to health experts and government officials, domestic air pollution remains one of the leading silent killers in sub-Saharan Africa. Decades of reliance on solid biomass for cooking have disproportionately affected women and young children, leading to high rates of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, severe asthma, and cardiovascular complications. By expanding access to Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), the government projects a significant reduction in avoidable respiratory illnesses.

Speaking on the strategic trajectory of the project, policymakers emphasized that clean cooking solutions are no longer a luxury but an urgent public health necessity.
