FX Reforms and Naira Stability: Presidency Knocks The Economist Over 'Distorted' Nigeria Assessment
At the heart of the administration's defensive stance is the aggressive overhaul of Nigeria's monetary and fiscal frameworks. Dare pointed out that President Tinubu inherited an economy burdened by a heavily subsidized foreign exchange regime, multiple arbitrary windows, and a unsustainable debt-service-to-revenue ratio. The administration argues that maintaining these structural anomalies was a recipe for national bankruptcy.
Addressing the sharp depreciation of the local currency, the Presidency maintained that the rationalization of the foreign currency market was a necessary bitter pill. By collapsing the multiple exchange rate windows, the administration has reportedly succeeded in curbing lucrative arbitrage opportunities that previously enriched a select group of financial elites at the expense of the national treasury.
"To suggest that these structural cancers could be excised overnight without transitional pain is economically illiterate," Dare asserted in his statement.
While the floating of the Naira has driven up the cost of imports and triggered double-digit inflation, official quarters argue that the long-term outlook is positive. The central bank's actions have allegedly contributed to improved foreign investment inflows, healthier trade balances, and a gradual rebuilding of external reserves, which are crucial for stabilizing the local currency in the medium term.
