Global Shockwaves: How Rising Oil Prices and Trump-Iran Tensions Threaten the Naira's Recovery

Reading: Part 2 of 3The Paradox of High Oil Prices on Nigeria's Local Currency

While a surge in Brent crude to $91 per barrel traditionally signals a windfall for oil-exporting nations, Nigeria's current economic architecture presents a stark paradox. The local currency, the Naira, faces severe downward pressure as the cost of importing refined petroleum products escalates in tandem with global crude prices. Because Nigeria still relies heavily on foreign refineries for its domestic fuel consumption, the gains from selling crude are rapidly eroded by the ballooning foreign exchange bill required to import petrol.

This import-dependent structure creates an immediate liquidity squeeze in the official Nigeria Autonomous Foreign Exchange Market (NAFEM). Economic analysts point out that as the landing cost of premium motor spirit (PMS) climbs, the demand for US dollars to fund these imports intensifies, neutralizing the Central Bank of Nigeria's (CBN) efforts to stabilize the Naira. Consequently, instead of boosting foreign reserves, high oil prices could trigger a wider balance-of-payments deficit.

Furthermore, the global fallout from the US-Iran conflict has pushed the yield on 10-year US Treasuries to their highest levels since early 2025. This surge in foreign yields makes US assets highly attractive to international investors, prompting a massive capital flight from emerging markets, including Nigeria. The exit of foreign portfolio investment (FPI) from Nigerian debt instruments further depletes dollar liquidity, compounding the challenges faced by local monetary authorities.
