Reading: Part 2 of 3Grief Without Bodies: The Agony of Nepal's Symbolic Funerals

With thousands still missing and the likelihood of finding more survivors close to zero, heartbroken families in Kathmandu and surrounding districts have begun performing symbolic funeral rites. In traditional Hindu and Buddhist customs, a body must be cremated to release the soul. Faced with the agonizing reality of empty coffins, families have turned to ancient rituals, crafting tiny effigies out of straw and barley to represent their missing relatives before setting them ablaze on the banks of sacred rivers.

At the historic Pashupati temple in Kathmandu, 12-year-old Rozel Shrestha lit a straw effigy representing his missing father, Krishna Shrestha, who was working in the Rasuwa district when the floods hit. "We searched everywhere, went to morgues across the country, but could not find his body," the boy’s uncle, Jeevan Shrestha, told reporters. "So the family sat down and decided we have to do our traditional rituals to liberate his soul, so he can find peace."

The crisis has completely overwhelmed Nepal’s fragile health and forensic infrastructure. At the Gokarna forest reserve in Kathmandu, security personnel have been forced to prepare dozens of unidentified bodies for mass burials. Hospital authorities have reportedly run out of refrigeration space, forcing grieving relatives to expedite funerals even while other members of their families remain lost under the mud. The sheer scale of the disaster has pushed the nation's psychological and logistical capacity to its absolute limit.
