Immigration Crackdown: Two Nigerians Detained in Delhi Over Alleged Visa Overstay

In what has been described as a coordinated law enforcement push, Indian police in the Dwarka district of New Delhi have detained two Nigerian nationals for allegedly residing in the country without valid travel documents. The operation, which targeted foreign nationals overstaying their visas, is part of a broader, intensified campaign by Indian immigration authorities to sanitize residential hubs populated by expatriates.

According to preliminary reports from the Dwarka district police command, the individuals were apprehended after failing to produce valid passports and visa renewal permits during a routine stop-and-search procedure. Law enforcement officials in Delhi have increasingly deployed localized sweeps in areas like Dwarka, Chander Vihar, and Uttam Nagar, which are known to host significant populations of African students, businessmen, and medical tourists.

The detained individuals, whose identities have been withheld pending formal consular communication, are currently being held at a local detention center. Under the Indian Foreigners Act of 1946, individuals found staying in the country beyond their visa validity face stringent legal actions, including prolonged detention, hefty fines, and compulsory deportation, subject to judicial and administrative clearance.
