Niger Police Smash Kidnap Syndicate Posing as Local Vigilantes, Three Arrested for Murder and Robbery

In a troubling revelation that underscores the growing vulnerability of community-based security structures, the Niger State Police Command has busted a criminal syndicate operating under the guise of local vigilantes in Mariga Local Government Area. The suspects, who allegedly weaponized their self-styled vigilante status to terrorize communities, were apprehended following a coordinated, intelligence-led raid by security operatives.

According to an official statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, the surveillance team attached to the Kontagora Area Command neutralized the syndicate's operational base at Uraga village. The three arrested suspects have been identified as 25-year-old Alhassan Tanko, 26-year-old Basiru Shaibu, and 28-year-old Ishaya Umar, all residents of Beri town in Mariga LGA.

The suspects allegedly formed a rogue branch of the widely recognized 'Yansakai' vigilante group—informal local defense networks that arose to combat banditry in Nigeria's Northwest and North-Central regions. Rather than protecting vulnerable farming communities, the syndicate reportedly utilized the cover of community policing to orchestrate systemic armed robberies and targeted kidnappings of unsuspecting residents.
