One Pathologist to Five Million Nigerians: Inside the Catastrophic Collapse of the Nation's Diagnostic Bedrock

The mass exodus of medical professionals, locally termed the 'Japa' phenomenon, is not merely a healthcare issue; it is a structural national emergency. Prof. Francis Faduyile, a prominent pathologist and politician, emphasized that the severe brain drain is propelled by intense push-and-pull factors. Systemic issues such as abysmal remuneration, economic instability, poor laboratory infrastructure, and rising insecurity actively push highly trained specialists out of the country.

Losing a single pathologist represents a massive financial and intellectual drain on the state. Prof. Edwin Wiredu, a Professor of Pathology at the University of Ghana and immediate past President of WADIAP, noted that training a medical specialist requires massive state and institutional investment over five to six years. When these professionals emigrate after only a few years of practice, they take with them irreplaceable clinical experience, leaving the domestic healthcare system with the grueling task of starting the training cycle all over again.

Furthermore, the distribution of the remaining pathologists is dangerously lopsided. Prof. Adekunbiola Banjo, a Professor of Anatomical Pathology at the University of Lagos, pointed out that the few specialists left in the country are heavily concentrated in major tier-1 urban centers like Lagos and Abuja. This concentration leaves millions of Nigerians in rural and underserved communities completely cut off from timely, high-quality diagnostic services, forcing them to travel hundreds of kilometers or rely on unverified, sub-standard laboratories.
