Panic in Niamey: Heavy Gunfire, Explosions Rock Russian-Backed Air Base 101 in Niger Capital

As the dust settles on the immediate exchange of fire in Niamey, the strategic implications for West Africa’s security architecture remain profound. The primary threat landscape in Niger is dominated by a brutal, internecine conflict between two powerful jihadist networks: the Islamic State in the Sahel (EIS) and the Al-Qaeda-affiliated Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM). These factions are not only fighting the state but are locked in a bloody struggle against each other for territorial dominance across the Sahel.

For Nigeria and the wider ECOWAS sub-region, the instability in Niamey is a matter of grave concern. Despite diplomatic rifts, Niger shares a porous, 1,500-kilometer border with Nigeria.
