Plateau Orders Immediate Closure of Public, Private Schools Over Diphtheria Threat

In a swift response to a looming public health emergency, the Plateau State Government has directed the immediate, temporary closure of all public and private primary and secondary schools across the state. Effective Monday, September 7, 2026, the directive suspends all academic activities as health officials scramble to contain suspected cases of diphtheria detected across several key local government areas, including Jos North, Wase, Jos South, and Bassa.

The order, issued under the leadership of Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, leaves no room for exemptions. According to an official statement signed by the Honourable Commissioner for Information and Communication, Rt. Hon. Joyce Lohya Ramnap, even schools that have already commenced their academic terms are required to shut down immediately. The administration emphasized that the suspension of classes will remain in force indefinitely, pending a thorough risk assessment by health authorities.

Highlighting the severity of the situation, the Commissioner urged school proprietors, administrators, parents, and guardians to comply strictly with the state directive. "The measure is aimed at protecting the safety and wellbeing of our students, alongside teaching and non-teaching staff, during this critical period," Ramnap stated, adding that the government deeply appreciates the cooperation of all educational stakeholders as defensive health protocols are deployed.
