Presidency Blames Contractor for Strategic Benin-Asaba Highway Collapse, Demands Urgent Intervention

While the Presidency's swift action in identifying and publicly calling out the contractor is a step toward accountability, it also exposes deeper structural cracks within Nigeria’s public procurement and project monitoring systems. For too long, the execution of critical infrastructural projects has been plagued by allegations of inflation of contract values, poor oversight, and a lack of rigorous post-construction audits. Scapegoating a contractor, while justified in cases of clear negligence, must not cover up the institutional failures of the supervisory ministries.

To prevent a recurrence of such embarrassing engineering failures, the Federal Ministry of Works must institutionalize a culture of strict performance bonds and independent third-party quality inspections. Contracts should be awarded only to firms with proven track records of durability and technical competence, rather than as political patronage. Furthermore, there must be clear legal and financial consequences for contractors who deliver substandard projects, including the forfeiture of performance guarantees and criminal prosecution for economic sabotage.

The road ahead demands a transparent, zero-tolerance approach to infrastructure decay. As Nigeria strives to rebuild its economy amidst fiscal constraints, it cannot afford to fund the same road projects repeatedly due to corrupt practices or incompetent engineering.
