Seme Border Levy Dispute Escalates as Clearing Agents Petition Police Over Assault, Detained Trucks

At the heart of this border dispute is the highly lucrative administration of monthly truck levies collected from operators transit-shipping goods through the Seme corridor. The NCJTFLCA alleges that despite their members contributing significantly to the overall levy pool, they have been systematically excluded from the sharing and distribution arrangements overseen by the ANLCA-led committee. This exclusion has sparked intense scrutiny over the lack of transparency regarding the total sums collected monthly from stakeholders.

From an economic standpoint, disruptions at the Seme border carry severe implications for trade facilitation and regional market stability. As Nigeria seeks to maximize customs revenue and stabilize trade metrics to support the Naira, administrative bottlenecks, arbitrary levies, and internal security threats at key trade gateways present serious setbacks. In seeking a sustainable resolution, the NCJTFLCA, which maintains its legal status as a Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) registered entity, has urged the police to initiate an immediate investigation and convene a mediation meeting with all affected parties. The group has called for strict measures to prevent unlawful interference in their operations, stressing that the establishment of a transparent, mutually agreed-upon levy system is critical to restoring trade harmony and protecting the national economy.
