Sokoto Boat Disaster: Death Toll Hits 65 as Demands Grow for Urgent Goronyo Dam Overhaul

Beyond the immediate tragedy of the capsized boat, a deeper, more systemic crisis is brewing in the region. Hon. Bashir Usman Gorau, representing the Goronyo/Gada Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has sounded a loud alarm regarding the structural and environmental health of the Goronyo Dam and its critical tributaries. He warned that the disaster cannot be viewed in isolation from the broader infrastructural neglect plaguing the area.

Built over five decades ago by the Federal Government, the Goronyo Dam has allegedly accumulated massive amounts of silt and sediment. This unchecked siltation has drastically compromised the reservoir's original water-holding capacity. Consequently, the choked waterways have altered current patterns, heightened flooding risks, and made navigation extremely hazardous for local fishermen and transporters who rely on fragile wooden canoes.

The lawmaker criticized the historical pattern of waiting for preventable disasters to strike before mobilizing relief. He insisted that the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and other disaster-management agencies must proactively deploy technical expertise and resources to dredge the dam and its tributaries, rather than treating these recurring tragedies as inevitable natural occurrences.
