Solar Installation Spark Ignites Fire Outbreak in Kwara Residence

Reading: Part 2 of 2The Editor's View: The Hidden Cost of Nigeria's Solar Boom

As Nigeria’s national grid continues to experience frequent collapses, millions of citizens are actively migrating to solar power, inverters, and other renewable energy alternatives to keep their businesses and homes running. However, this rapid, unregulated transition has birthed a dangerous parallel market dominated by untrained technicians, quack installers, and sub-standard solar accessories. The unfortunate incident in Kwara State is not an isolated event but a symptom of a broader regulatory blind spot in Nigeria’s green energy boom.

Energy safety experts emphasize that solar installations require highly specialized knowledge of Direct Current (DC) electricity, which behaves differently from traditional Alternating Current (AC) power.

"Many local electricians treat solar systems like basic household wiring, ignoring the critical need for proper cable sizing, circuit breakers, and high-quality charge controllers to prevent overheating,"
a renewable energy consultant told Todaynews.ng. When low-grade cables are subjected to high current under Nigeria's intense sun, insulation degradation is inevitable, creating a prime environment for devastating sparks.

To avert future disasters, the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) and the Energy Commission of Nigeria must enforce strict certification frameworks for all solar technicians and installers. For everyday Nigerians, the Kwara fire serves as a sobering reminder: cutting corners on installation fees and opting for cheap, unverified technicians could ultimately cost them their lives and properties. Investing in certified experts and flame-retardant materials is no longer a luxury, but a non-negotiable safety standard.
