In an address that has sent shockwaves through the global tech sector and diplomatic circles alike, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, has issued a sobering warning that artificial intelligence could pose an "existential threat to humanity." Speaking before the UN Human Rights Council during its 63rd session in Geneva, Turk painted a grim picture of a rapidly evolving technological landscape where human rights are increasingly subservient to corporate ambition.

Turk forcefully challenged the sluggish pace of global AI governance, questioning the political will of world leaders to rein in the sector. "The need for AI governance is widely acknowledged, but where is the action?" Turk asked rhetorically, warning that protracted delays in policy formulation would ultimately only benefit the massive tech companies, their billionaire owners, and their enablers. He decried the unprecedented consolidation of influence, noting that a handful of individuals currently hold nearly unlimited power over technologies possessing unimaginable computing capacity.

The UN rights chief did not mince words when addressing the marketing narratives of Silicon Valley's elite. He argued that the industry's frequent invocation of "freedom" is a carefully constructed facade designed to shield predatory practices.

"They talk about freedom, but on closer inspection, this turns out to be little more than the freedom to exploit our data,"
Turk declared, demanding a fundamental shift in how human data is harvested, monetized, and weaponized under the guise of technological advancement.
