Unemployment Crisis: 9,000 Jigawa Graduates Jostle for 500 Teaching Slots in J-Tsangaya Scheme

The J-Tsangaya programme is not just an ordinary employment scheme; it is a critical sociopolitical intervention designed by the Jigawa State Government to reform the traditional Tsangaya (Almajiri) school system. By recruiting 500 qualified tutors, the state aims to systematically integrate formal western education—specifically literacy, numeracy, basic science, and vocational skills—into the traditional Islamic curriculum. This hybrid approach is aimed at reducing the number of out-of-school children and mitigating the social vulnerabilities associated with the Almajiri system in Northern Nigeria.

Governor Umar Namadi’s administration has placed educational reform at the heart of its 12-point agenda, recognizing that security and economic development cannot be achieved without addressing foundational literacy. The J-Tsangaya recruitment, therefore, carries immense political weight. Success in this sector could provide a blueprint for other northern states grappling with similar educational and socio-religious challenges. Yet, the massive mismatch between the number of available positions and the army of unemployed graduates reveals a deeper economic malaise.

While the government deserves commendation for attempting to formalize the Tsangaya system, critics argue that a 500-teacher intake is a drop in the ocean. Jigawa State reportedly hosts thousands of informal Tsangaya centers, housing hundreds of thousands of children. To truly revolutionize this space, policy analysts suggest that the state requires a much larger budgetary commitment and an aggressive expansion of its public school infrastructure, which is currently hampered by fiscal constraints.
