Global Tech Regulatory Shift: EU Drags ChatGPT, Reddit, and Roblox Into High-Risk Security Dragnet

In a move that marks a historical watershed for the global artificial intelligence sector, the European Union has officially designated ChatGPT as a "very large" online platform, dragging the generative AI pioneer into its most stringent regulatory net. The European Commission announced on Monday that OpenAI’s signature product, alongside social discussion forum Reddit and gaming ecosystem Roblox, will now face intense legal scrutiny under the bloc’s landmark Digital Services Act (DSA).

This development represents the first time an AI-driven chatbot has been classified under the same heavy-duty regulatory framework designed for traditional search engines and social media giants. To bring the popular AI chatbot under this regulatory umbrella, EU regulators reportedly qualified ChatGPT as a search engine, reflecting its evolving role in how modern internet users search for and synthesize information online.

According to EU technology chief Henna Virkkunen, the decision is a direct response to the massive influence these platforms wield. "ChatGPT, Reddit and Roblox will now be held to a higher standard of scrutiny and accountability in the European Union, in line with their large impact on our citizens and society," Virkkunen stated in a press briefing, signaling Brussels' resolve to curb digital excesses.
