Insecurity Clampdown: Federal Government Destroys 1,419 Illicit Weapons, Recovers 5,449 Firearms to Safeguard National Economy

While arms recovery is traditionally viewed through a national security lens, economic experts assert that the proliferation of illegal weapons has a direct, devastating impact on the Nigerian Naira. Insecurity driven by illegal weaponry has paralyzed agricultural hubs across the Middle Belt and North-West, driving up food inflation and forcing the country to rely on costly food imports. This heavy import dependency continuously drains the country's foreign exchange reserves, piling immense pressure on the local currency.

Furthermore, the perception of Nigeria as an active conflict zone due to banditry and kidnapping severely discourages Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). When international investors shy away, capital inflows dry up, leaving the Central Bank of Nigeria with limited options to defend the Naira in the foreign exchange market. Security analysts point out that every weapon recovered by the NCCSALW represents a step toward restoring the foreign investor confidence needed to stabilize the macroeconomic environment and boost capital inflows.

As the NCCSALW prepares to launch a new national small arms survey to replace the obsolete 2016 framework, the strategic message remains clear: security is the absolute bedrock of economic recovery. By aligning with international arms control conventions, Nigeria is not only seeking to secure its communities but is also building the stable, conflict-free environment required to revitalize domestic production, attract global capital, and ultimately salvage the long-term value of the Naira.
