Ogun 2027: Monarch Demands Rigorous Background Checks on Abiodun’s Potential Successors

Addressing the delicate role of traditional institutions in contemporary democratic dispensations, Oba Akinyemi, who has spent over two decades on the throne, emphasized that monarchs must maintain strict political neutrality. However, he clarified that neutrality does not equate to silence or indifference when the welfare of the people is at stake.

He urged his fellow traditional rulers across Ogun State to exercise extreme caution in their public endorsements, noting that their voices hold significant weight among the masses. He advocated for an objective advisory role, where royal fathers guide their subjects to look beyond cosmetic political promises and evaluate concrete development track records.

On the highly debated issue of the political marginalisation of the Yewa people—who have long agitated for an opportunity to produce an Ogun State governor—Oba Akinyemi acknowledged the legitimacy of the struggle. He noted that while the region's grievances are historically valid and undeniable, the ultimate metric for leadership selection must always remain the capacity to deliver good governance.

The monarch concluded by asserting that the primary focus of the next administration must be the delivery of tangible democratic dividends, specifically the revitalization of basic education, grassroots healthcare, and economic empowerment. He stated that regardless of ethnic or regional backgrounds, the leader Ogun State needs in 2027 is one who is ready to elevate the living standards of everyday citizens.
