According to reports from close associates within these camps, preliminary discussions have frequently hit a brick wall over who will step down for whom. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, despite his advanced age, still commands a vast national network and views the next election cycle as his final, definitive bid. Meanwhile, Peter Obi's supporters—the highly vocal and digitally mobilized "Obidients"—view their candidate as the face of a generational shift, making any arrangement where Obi plays second fiddle to a traditional political actor highly unpalatable to his base.

Adding to this complex matrix is Rabiu Kwankwaso, whose absolute control of the Kwankwasiyya movement in Kano State makes him a critical kingmaker in the North. Kwankwaso's strategic leverage is immensely valuable, but his previous reluctance to yield the top ticket to Peter Obi during the run-up to the 2023 elections underscores the rigid nature of these negotiations.
